Cool Tips for a Fresh 4th

Celebrating Independence Day should be a blast (pun fully intended)! Whether you’re heading to the beach, the backyard, or a barbeque in the park, here are three tips to confidently keep your holiday fresh, healthful and bright.

  • Stay Hydrated! - For each cold brewski you crack open or glass of sangria you sip on, have a glass of water. Alternate drinks with water, and you’ll be less likely to eat that second cheeseburger (or to wake up with a hangover!)  Punch-up a pitcher of iced water with cubed watermelon, blueberries and jicama and voila! Red, white and blue “spa water” for a crowd.

  • Favor Fresh Fruit and Veggies! - It’s finally summer, and that means fruits and veggies are abundant and in-season. Fruits and vegetables are packed with fiber to keep you feeling fuller for longer, without weighing your down- so you’ll have plenty of gusto for another round of Marco Polo in the pool with the kids!

Choose with Confidence! - Whether your favorite is a hot dog, hamburger or BBQ chicken, grant yourself the permission to enjoy that food without guilt. Don’t overstress what you’re eating too much. Still want to keep it light? Swap the bun out a bun for a lettuce wrap, or skip out on cheese or extra sauce. Remember- it’s a holiday, so have fun!

Summer Fruits for Long-Term Brain Health

Linked to the prevention of many lifestyle-related illnesses (heart disease, cancer, even alzheimers,) flavonoids may offer the most brain protection as a regular part of your every-day long-term diet. The best place to get them? Fresh fruits! Some of the most potent of which are in-season.. right now!

Blueberries - Who hasn’t heard that “blueberries can help improve memory?” Mix them into your morning oats or smoothie, or sprinkle a handful over your salad for a sweet and juicy treat.

Cherries - Keep a big bowl washed and ready to go on the counter for a delicious snack- try pairing with a handful of almonds for a snack after yoga practice.

Grapes - You don’t have to drink wine to get protective flavonoids working for you. Keep sweet purple grapes in the freezer and you’ve got a delicious frozen dessert, or a flavorful way to chill a glass of water.
